Amber Velasco, Lee High School, 2012

Amber has attended Grace Church since 2006. As a member of the youth group, she helped at homeless shelters and soup kitchens, and performed in the youth dinner theater productions. At Grace, she tutored every Monday throughout the school year for the past 5 years. In school, she tutored other students and participated in many extracurricular activities. She started the Physics Club and was a member of the National, Math, Science, and History Honor Societies. With the honor societies came involvement with more volunteer activities.  Active in sports, Amber played volleyball for four years, basketball for two years, lacrosse for four years, and ran track for one year. She was a scholar athlete for every sport she played. Amber’s GPA was an impressive 4.3!

During her sophomore and junior years, Amber interned in the research labs at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. This fall she will be attending Johns Hopkins University, where she will study Biomedical Engineering. While we originally only planned one scholarship this year, with funds accumulated from the previous year and an extra donation or two, we were able to award Amber $1200 towards her studies at Hopkins.
